We recognize that our presence in the heart of the Ionian archipelago, is a great historical and social responsibility. We will make every effort to minimize our footprint, through our commitment to protect the environment and local communities, by promoting education, taking action and promoting awareness to the public, to our employees and to our visitors, because we know that, with our efforts, our business will likely affect the local ecosystem and the local community to a minimum.

From its inception, environmental and socially sustainable initiatives have been an integral part of Skorpios operational culture. The area is in the center of the Ionian archipelago, among important marine species, fish, and mammals, and it is surrounded by a robust marine ecosystem, based on Posidonia oceanica meadows, where the traditional Ionian way of life centered on the sea and its resources. Skorpios owners are committed to collaborate with scientists and specialists to monitor our performance in accordance with internationally recognized approaches on environment and biodiversity.

We strive to surpass Best Practice benchmarking levels and continually improve upon the existing environmental and social sustainability performance within the confines and parameters of a location such as ours. As the first luxury retreat in the area to commit to these sustainability principles throughout the design, construction and operational stages, our commitment has been unwavering. It is this commitment that will allow us to pursuit and achieve a certified status (ISO 140001 and EMAS) by December 2019. To ensure that we monitor our efforts and continuously improve, we will appoint an environmental specialist company as the biodiversity coordinator, who will be responsible for identifying environ-mental risks, recording, and monitoring our performance through benchmarking, whilst driving the environmental and social initiatives undertaken.

The unspoilt and special location of Skorpios necessitates a creative relationship with the local and traditional activities. Special consideration is given to employing and empowering local residents and producing agricultural and dairy organic products on the island. The owner utilizes the knowledge and abilities of our employees as well as the wider communities, to give everyone a means, as well as the education, to act on their concerns. For this reason, we have committed in educating our resident and temporary staff on sustainability principles and how to incorporate them in everyday practices, we encourage our visitors and guests in acting towards environmental protection, and we voluntarily inform the public on the state of the environment on and around the island.

In addition to this, we ensure that the whole Skorpios Island and the management comply with the National and European legislation, laws and regulations, and that we do not in-fringe on local customs and cultural practices. We strive to benefit the local community through shared knowledge and joint endeavours.
